The benefits of a hoof pad

Using a hoof pad can make a big difference.

Hoof pads are more than just an add-on. They are a valuable tool in modern hoof care and offer tailor-made solutions for both support and performance. Using a hoof pad can have a big impact on a horse's comfort, health and performance.

A hoof pad serves as an extra layer between the hoof and the horseshoe. Depending on the situation a pad can offer several important benefits.

! Consulting a veterinarian, particularly if any signs of lameness are observed, is always recommended.

Elementjes-06 When is a hoof pad useful?

Protection & Hoof quality
Pads protect sensitive soles from damage or extreme conditions such as snow and provide support to strengthen and improve weak or cracked hooves.

Support & shock absorption
Even distribution of pressure and absorption of impact, easing stress on joints and tendons.

Balance  &  Movement
Pads can help correct the horse's posture and rolling point, improving its gait and ease of movement.

Therapeutic and orthopedic use
Pads support treatment of hoof and limb issues like arthritis or laminitis.

Every hoof is different. Every case unique.

Which pad do you need?

Choosing the right hoof pad isn’t a one-size-fits-all decision. When it comes to hoof pads, there is a large buffet of pad options, each designed for specific purposes and solutions.
When selecting a hoof pad, consider some key features that will provide the best support and protection. Ask yourself:

  • What tickness do you need? Flat, wedged...
  • What material do you need? Leather or PU (plastic)...
  • How hard should the pad be? How flexible should it be?
  • What design do you need? A full or rim pad, a 3D or Plexus pad...

Leather/Salamander
Durable and breathable natural product, offering excellent shock absorption and increased comfort for the horse when moving.

Pu / Plastic
Durable and wear-resistant, with options for harder or softer material and pre-shaped properties to provide targeted support.

Soft and Hard pads
A sensitive hoof or a hoof with a weaker frog benefits more from a softer pad, giving maximum shock absorbtion and protection. A harder pad will give more support.

Pour-in Pads
Pour-in pads are made of urethane adhesive and bond to the sole of a hoof. It forms a soft, supportive layer that protects the hoof or increases the weight-bearing surface.

Elementjes-06 Pad designs

Flat
Flat soles protect the hoof and keep the filling material securely in place. They provide the horse with greater comfort in cases of hoof cracks, osteoarthritis or thin foot soles.

Wedged
Wedged pads are useful for improving the horse's foot position or the rolling point of the hoof. They can also be used to create more bearing surface for the hoof.

Full cover / Rim pads
A pad that covers the entire hoof provides complete protection and support. Rim pads and heel wedges are not meant to cover the hoof, but for example to provide shock absorption or correct the foot.

3D Pads / Plexus Pads / Frog Pads
Frog pads are designed for horses with frog issues or weak frogs. The 3D pads and Plexus Pads help with the Hoof Pastern Axis and support the frog surface to relief pressure on the heels.

A good fit is essential

The application of hoof pads

A good fit of the pad is extremely important for the comfort of the horse. If the pad fits well, the horse feels comfortable too. You want to maximise comfort and avoid causing any additional problems (pressure on the hoof, the pad shifting, etc.). A pad must provide good support throughout the entire period that the horse is shod; that is why a high-quality pad is essential.

Depending on the type of pad and the hoof condition there are some general steps to follow:

  •   Mark the horseshoe details such as clip(s) on the pad
  •    Cut the pad to size
  •    Secure the pad to the horseshoe (drill hole/nail)
  •    Finish the set of horseshoe and pad on the grinder for a neat finish.
The Diamond Hoof Pads are easy to aplly and cut to perfect size.

Elementjes-06 Don't forget to follow-up!

Daily hoof care is essential for healthy hooves and the effectiveness of the shoeing with a pad. Although you cannot pick out the hoof as you would with a normal shoeing, keeping the hoof clean will enable you to detect problems quickly. A pad, for example, can tear, crack or suffer other damage that will affect its effectiveness.

Good follow-up also means observing and listening. By listening carefully to the horse owner or stable manager, the farrier can get a good idea of how well the shoeing/pad is working. A before and after check also helps to see if everything is going well. If necessary, an X-ray can be useful to obtain more information for a thorough evaluation.

Packing materials

Ensure that the shoeing with a pad is properly finished by using a suitable packing material. All pads, exept for rim pads need a packing material to comfort, seal and prevent debris sticking between the hoof and pad. Depending on the treatment, choose a softer or harder filling, one that offers more or less cushioning... Vettec offers a range of products that will provide you with the necessary material:
