deformities in foals

Deformities in foals

Deformities in foals do not always need to be treated surgically. The farrier often can treat the incorrect growth with a toe, medial or lateral extention or use a glue-on cuff designed for foals. Foal extensions, when properly applied, offer more gentle, positive changes that can be monitored and adjusted as the situation improves.  This usually happens between one to two weeks, then the extension is removed.* Vet involvement is always recommended.

Vettec SuperFast (30 sec hoof glue) is also ideal for foal extensions and making custom shoes. This product helps building heels, correcting heel angles, and medial/lateral extensions. Good for small hoof repairs.

Super Fast allows the farrier, vet and owner to protect the hoof when the condition of the hoof wall does not allow traditional hoof shoes to be nailed.

Temporary shoeing with Super Fast, together with Equi-Pak, provides tailor-made support in cases
of laminitis or other lameness, when nailing is too painful. At the same time, it offers the possibility of improving the angle of the heel or creating medial or lateral support.

Temporary shoeing with Super Fast can also be used for trail running and occasional training. In addition, it also prevents the need to nail traditional horseshoes to fragile and brittle hoof walls. Apply it to the hoof for medial or lateral support or to change the angle of the heels.

Foals extentions with Super Fast

SuperFast is ideal for foal extensions because additional layers can be added at any time and excess material can easily be rasped away as the situation improves.

  • TOE EXTENSIONS:
A toe extension helps to correct flexural deformities such as contracted flexor tendons by adding support to the toe and keeping heels close to the ground.

  • MEDIAL OR LATERAL EXTENSIONS:
A medial or lateral extension helps to correct limb deformities including base narrow, base wide, valgus, varus and assymmetrical deviations by providing support to bring the horse's weight back in the plumb line with the leg.

Step-by-Step Foal Extensions with Vettec SuperFast

LATERAL EXTENSION ON 'WINDSWEPT' FOAL

step1-trim the hoof
1. Trim the hoof. Any bacteria around the white line is also removed. You do not want to trap any bacteria and it is a weak spot to adhere to.
step2-dry the hoof
2. Dry the hoof. Note that sole is pared out, and all loose structure
is being removed. DO NOT over-pare the sole.
step3-apply first layer SuperFast
3. Apply ground layer of SuperFast. Any bacteria around the white line is also removed. You do not want to trap any bacteria and it is a weak spot to adhere to.
step4
4. Be careful not to come too far onto sole with the SuperFast. Use a gloved finger to remove any excess or rasp or hoof knife if material is set.
step5

5. After ground layer is set, rasp level and check for proper balance.

step6
6. To apply the lateral extension, stand foal on plastic, foam board or paper. Apply Super Fast outward and up onto the wall to achieve desired support.
step7

7. Apply layers as needed. Make sure to not apply too thick at once,
as heat on foals may be too much.

step8
8. Solar view of ground layer and 3 lateral layers applied

9. After ground layer is set, rasp level and check for proper balance.

TOE EXTENSION

Prepare the hoof the same way as for a lateral extension.

1. Apply the ground layer first.

2. Add Super Fast to toe to desired length. Rasp toe extension back until heel comes off the ground. If the heel touches the ground you might have too much leverage at the toe.

This universal corrective shoe can be applied as toe, heel, lateral are medial extention for foals.

1. Prepare the hoof the same way as for an extension. Remove anything loose, flaky, shelly or diseased.

2. Prepare the cuff. The extentions that are not required can easily be cut off. Simply trim, rasp or linish the extensions that are not required. Check the needed size of the shoe on the foot. If needed widen of narrow the shoe by simply hammer as a normal bar shoe.

3. Heat the cuff with a hot air gun to allow the plastic to become flexible and soft. Whilst warm, place the cuff on the hoof to achieve an accurate form of the cuff to the hoof.

4. Dry the hoof. Note that the sole is pared out, and all loose structure is being removed. DO NOT over-pare the sole.

5. Apply Adhere as soon as you’re done drying. This means having the cartridge, the gun and cuff ready.

6. Adhere sets in 1 minute and is weight bearing in 4 to 5 minutes.

7. Trim to suit for optimum support.

! Do note to check the shoe and its fit reguarly since the feet of a foal increase fast. On no account should the cuff be left on for more than 21 days.
